Paccar MX-13: Most Common Problems

JEREMY PROOMEBy JEREMY PROOME on Jul 17, 2025

Some of the most common problems of the Paccar MX-13 include issues with the fuel injectors, cooling, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valves, and problems pertaining to the Power Control Interface (PCI).

Due to these issues, it’s often seen as a very problematic engine despite its popularity and use in so many vehicles.

What exactly is the Paccar MX-13?

The Paccar MX-13 is a 12.9-litre, inline 6-cylinder diesel engine that is designed for use in heavy-duty vehicles, mainly trucks in the Kenworth and Peterbilt brands. They’re designed to be efficient for long-haul trips, delivering a lot of power and torque for larger-sized vehicles.

Common Paccar MX-13 Problems:

  • EGR Valve Clogging: The Paccar MX-13’s Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is susceptible to becoming blocked or clogged.

  • PCI Issues: The Power Control Interface (PCI) is known to malfunction and can cause other components to fail, resulting in engine issues.

  • Turbocharger performance: The Paccar MX-13’s turbocharger can operate poorly, lacking power and acceleration.

  • Cooling System: The cooling system can fail, causing overheating in the truck’s engine.

To avoid encountering these issues, it’s best to have the Paccar MX-13 maintained, repaired, and serviced by experts. If you are dealing with problems, it's advisable to have the Paccar MX-13 assessed using a diagnostic machine.
