BMW and MINI FRM: Bricked After a Jump Start? Here's the Solution

This ‘bricking’ of your vehicle can be associated with the FRM, which is the footwell module. The FRM is a crucial component of BMW and MINI car systems and is responsible for lighting, alarm features, and communication with other modules, among other things.
How do I know my vehicle is suffering from this?
Well, if you jump-started your vehicle and some of the problematic symptoms started right after (headlights won’t turn off, turn signals don’t work, electric mirrors malfunctioning, etc.), it’s likely that your FRM is damaged due to the jump.
These problems with the electronic systems can also emerge after a battery swap or a low battery.
Because it can look like a variety of different electronic problems all separate from one another, one can think they’re isolated issues. This is why it’s best to test the FRM and save yourself time and money.

Where is the FRM located?
It is located in the passenger side footwell and can be removed, mailed-in and tested for further diagnostics.
What actually happens?
When you start your car, the FRM writes to its memory chip. When the voltage is interrupted, sags, or spikes (such as during a jump-start or a dying battery phase), the write can be corrupted. The FRM can therefore not ‘control’ the electronics properly.
How we fix it:
We rebuild the memory, replace anything that was damaged, and send back your own FRM with its coding and VIN intact.

Repair or Replace?
Depending on the damage, many FRMs can be repaired. However, if there is extensive physical damage to your FRM, a replacement option may be recommended. The decision on this is down to the state of the FRM. Once we receive it via mail, we can assess and consult with you on the best route forward.
