
Fitted a Used BMW/MINI FEM or BDC and Now Things Don't Work? Here's Why
While installing a used FEM or BDC module in your vehicle may be a quick and smart fix, there are known scenarios where common issues begin to creep in again. If you’re experiencing this, it doesn’t necessarily mean the module is broken - it’s simply not coded correctly to your car.

The symptoms of a mis-coded FEM/BDC
Here's a real example we handled. A previous owner had swapped in a used FEM, and the new owner was left with a strange list of problems:

The car reported itself as a 4-door when it's actually a 2-door.

The mirrors wouldn't fold in.

The driver's door-lock button didn't work.

The driver and passenger seat heaters didn't work.
These are typical issues with an incorrectly coded (or uncoded) FEM/BDC, highlighting that there is a compatibility issue with the car.
What's really going on: the vehicle order (VO)
Every BMW and MINI is built to a vehicle order (VO), which is essentially a coded list of the exact options and body style your car left the factory with. The FEM/BDC uses that VO to determine which parts of the car to control, how many doors to lock/unlock, control of the mirrors, and more.
A used module will therefore then be pre-coded for the car it was in previously, emphasising the importance of having it re-coded when installed in your new car.
How it's fixed
The process of repair includes reprogramming of the FEM/BDC with the correct vehicle order and software for your car. In the case above, that resolved the feature problems, but it also surfaced a second issue: the DME software was corrupted and wouldn't accept reprogramming. To solve this, we had to reflash the DME with clean files and then re-code it back to your car's stock programming before everything worked together.
This is unfortunately common with used-module swaps, which is why it’s incredibly important to test the parts together.
Can you do this yourself?
Coding a FEM/BDC to a car's VO requires the right software and a correct data source, and a botched flash can leave the module (or the DME) in an even worse state. This is why it’s best to use the mail-in testing service where the module and DME are tested together by professionals, verified, and sent back.
Is my used FEM/BDC faulty?
It’s unlikely that you actually have a faulty FEM/BDC. Rather, it's a coding mismatch and not a hardware failure. It needs to be programmed to your specific vehicle order.
Why did only my seat heaters and mirrors stop working?
Those are functions the FEM/BDC enables based on your car's configuration. The wrong configuration will trigger the wrong behaviour. For example, if the FEM was coded for a 3-door car, it may not work correctly on your 5-door vehicle.
Do you need my ECU/DME too?
