BMW/MINI CAS: Repair or Replace? How We Decide and What It Costs

Choosing whether to repair or replace a malfunctioning CAS (Car Access System) is dependent on a few things. Even if your CAS is faulty (you can see a variety of CAS fault codes here), the good news is that many CAS modules can be repaired, but there are some key factors to consider in this process.

Always best to start with a test

The most conclusive way to determine the state of your CAS is to test it. Testing typically costs $159, which eliminates any doubt as to what the problem is. In The ECU Pro garage, we recreate the failure on the bench test, including heating the module to around 250°F to try to retrigger the faults.

Based on the test results, we can recommend the following:

1. Repair: It is possible to repair many CAS modules by simply replacing the faulty components on the control chip. Of course, it depends on a few variables, though. If repaired, the module is then heat-tested again. Repairs typically cost around $350.

2. Replacement clone: An option for more significantly damaged units is to do a replacement clone. A new CAS will be cloned and made compatible with your vehicle, saving time and complications. A clone typically costs around $650, and the testing fee you already paid is credited toward it, so you're not paying twice. Certain vehicles with unusual CAS models may require extra time due to the part being ordered. 

3. Further diagnosis: Not common, but the testing of the CAS may point to a problem with another component, a dead key, or a software problem. This problem can then be assessed for feasibility, and a replacement will be recommended by our technicians if the cost to repair is too expensive.

Confirmation before returning the CAS

A side note: If you spot fault codes in that video, don't worry. Those are specific to our test car and differ from vehicle to vehicle. What matters is that your CAS, DME, and key start and run the car cleanly.

What about the key?

One thing to consider is that you may need a key if the transponder in the fob is dead. A new key and program usually costs $199. We can often program keys you send in too, especially ones that have never been programmed. More on key replacements here.

You’ll be happy to know that all CAS testing, work, and repairs are under warranty. Of course, due to the fact that the underlying failure is heat-related and can recur, we'll also give you simple prevention advice (keeping the module cool genuinely helps).

Is it cheaper to repair or replace?
