
Water Damage: How a Leak or Blockage Can Lead to a Dead ECU
You may think the two things are worlds apart, but the amount of water leaks that have led to ECU damage and car issues is astounding. Understanding a circuit board
Circuit boards, such as those found in an ECU in your car, are comprised of tiny copper paths, which are fantastic conductors, but require the connections to remain separate. When water gets into a circuit board, and the circuit board is turned on while wet, water bridges the gap between different components and copper traces. This sends electricity where it should not go, which can fry sensitive parts on the board.
Of course, water can also simply damage the physical integrity of the board and make components weak due to the moisture.
Why it matters: where the water comes from
Some of the most prominent spots we’ve seen water enter cars are through cowl drains and sunroof drains, which are often blocked with leaves. The E-box under the cowl can fill up and the seals begin to leak into where the ECU sits.
Pressure washing with high-powered hoses can also cause seals to break or become damaged, which can let moisture into the ECU case.
However, it’s also not just water to be concerned about, as coolant (from a failed oil-filter housing gasket) can run down a connector harness and into the ECU module. Another common issue is oil wicking, which sees engine oil ‘wick’ inside the wiring into a connector attached to the ECU. Why it shows up months later
Sometimes water damage is immediate, but it can also only rear its head months later. This is because corrosion spreads even after water damage is spotted, and a board that initially survived a leak can eventually malfunction when the conditions are right (or rather ‘wrong’) next time around.
What to do at home
Firstly, try to assess where water may be entering your vehicle, with leaves or debris build-up being the first signs of a potential problem. Clear the cowl drains. lift the E-box lid and inspect the condition of the parts. You can also check the carpet under the modules to see if there is any moisture, and smell if there is any coolant or other liquid present.
It’s also good to remove the ECU connector and inspect the pins to see if they’re all in-tact and no corrosion is present there.
Repair or replace?
If your ECU has surface corrosion, or only the replaceable parts having the damage, we can repair the unit for you. If the ECU experienced prolonged submersion or extensive water damage, a replacement is often best. This will be cloned to your car beforehand so you can simply plug-and-play when you receive the new unit.
The route to follow is often dependent on the state of the ECU. Hence why it’s best to send it in for testing.
